What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?

What Upgrades Are Necessary to Be in Compliance With ADA?

ADA Compliant Public Entrances
When building new commercial spaces, at least 60% of the public entrances need to be accessible. That means it’s possible to have some entrances that are not accessible, but the majority of them need to be. This includes entrances from parking garages, from parking lots, and main entrances.
When building accessible landings that are wheelchair accessible, it’s necessary to construct the landing with enough clearance for a wheelchair and the door opening. The wheelchair user should not have to roll back onto the ramp in order for the door to open.
ADA Compliant Doors
Automatic doors that are either activated by a button or by a motion sensor. That means the actual door frame must be 34 inches to accommodate the width of the door itself when it is open at 90°.

Door handles must be wheelchair accessible, which means they should be situated 34 inches from the ground. They should be operable with one hand and not require twisting of the wrist (as with round doorknobs), a tight grip, or pinching. As a rule, manual doors should be operable with a loose grip or a closed fist.
When the door opens, there should be enough room for a wheelchair to sit comfortably in the space in front of the swinging door. If the door opens into a hallway with another door in it, there must be enough clearance for both doors to open and close with a wheelchair in the hall. The threshold of an ADA compliant door cannot exceed ½ inch for any new construction. The edges need to be beveled so that a wheelchair can easily roll over it. The slope cannot be steeper than 1:2. This applies to sliding doors as well as swinging doors.
